Inmates brought back for interviews and further assessments

Inmates and a number of staff assigned to the prison facility on Coetivy Island were brought back to Montagne Posée Prison yesterday, as the Seychelles Prison Service (SPS) conducts a review of its operations on the island.

The review will as well provide the SPS an opportunity to assess any information that it has received concerning possible compromise or breaches to its operations on the island.

The review and further assessment of inmates currently participating in the programme on Coetivy Island will take approximately one month.

“Our aim is to ensure that we operate our facilities to the standard required. Where there is a need to review with an aim to improve our operations, then we will do just that. Following the review, further discussions with our partners, such as the IDC, will be undertaken so that the programme can resume on a stronger footing,” said Raymond St Ange, the Superintendent of Prisons.

A report of the review will be submitted to the Office of the Designated Minister for onward management and direction where needed.

Yesterday morning’s operations involved an additional 15 prison officers from the prison’s Security Unit and was under the command of Samir Ghislain, deputy Superintendent of Prisons. He was assisted by the head of the prison’s Security Unit, Inspector Shafiq Andrade.

A number of prison staff remain posted to the Coetivy prison facility.
