Renovation work on the first inmate cells nears completion at Montagne Posée Prison male block
With the aim of improving conditions at the Montagne Posée prison, the first completely renovated inmate cells will soon come back online within the male block at the prison.
This project undertaken by the Seychelles prison service (SPS) under the direction of Chief Inspector Alexi Adrienne, head of the Maintenance and Projects Department within the SPS, will eventually see all inmate cell blocks within both the male block and the Secure Incarceration Unit (SIU) repaired and improved.
As part of the repairs to the male blocks, the units will see improved and more secure lighting, repairs to cells gates, improved lighting to individual cells, improved air circulation, repaired toilets and shower facilities, along with other upgrades to address safety and security for both inmates and staff.
As the project continues, each cell block being renovated will take approximately 6-10 weeks so as to be fully renovated and functional. The male block’s inmate living quarters are expected to be fully completed by early next year and in time for the SPS’s third observation of ‘Nelson Mandela Day’ which will be on July 18, 2020.
It should be recalled that the SPS undertook to improve and align its operations to the ‘Nelson Mandela Protocols’ on the Humane Treatment of Inmates, a UN Convention currently in force.
The SPS will be observing its 2nd Mandela Day this coming July 19, 2019 where updates to its ongoing projects and other improvements will be announced.
Ongoing general repairs, painting and general cleaning of the main incarceration facilities continue.
